The Wager and other Selections from the Pensées French mathematician, physicist, inventor, writer Christian philosopher,a child prodigy educated by his father, tax collector Rouen. Pascal's work in the natural and applied sciences,important contributions to the study of fluids, clarified the concepts of pressure and vacuum by generalizing the work of Evangelista Torricelli. Following Galileo,Torricelli, in 1646,he refuted Aristotle's followers who insisted nature abhors a vacuum. Pascal's results caused disputes before accepted. He was obsessed with religious philosophy, a subject on which he wrote extensively. he wrote on many religious, philosophical, and mathematical subjects. His notes and letters were edited and published posthumously as his Pensees.
